In March 2011, the Police Department held an informational meeting for residents to introduce the Neighborhood Watch Program (NWP) and solicit sign-ups for participation and Block Captains. Initially, 6 neighborhood groups were formed. Persistent City communications and citizen word-of-mouth has successfully grown this program and there are now 39 Neighborhood Watch groups in Belle Meade!
Officer Dee Howell is the on-site coordinator and liaison for Belle Meade’s Neighborhood Watch Program. Officer Howell communicates with the neighborhood Block Captains, who then send that information via email to the residents in their group that have signed up for the NWP. Officer Howell regularly sends out important BOLOs (“Be On the Look Out”) about recent crimes in the City, as well as information from Metro Nashville West Sector Precinct regarding crimes in areas close to Belle Meade, such as West Meade and Green Hills. She also will pass on pertinent crime prevention tips and suggestions for crime awareness.
The NWP has been highly successful in Belle Meade and is a tremendous support to the Police Department in its efforts to prevent and solve crimes in our City. All citizens are encouraged to be aware of unusual activities and report them promptly to the Police Department by calling 615-297-0241. However, signing up for the NWP can give you an extra level of security because residents tend to know the normal patterns of their neighbors and are quick to communicate strange activity to the police. The Belle Meade Police Department has a very rapid response time within the City and will always investigate any reports of suspicious activity.
Additional benefits of being part of the NWP are:

To support those involved in the NWP, especially the Block Captains, the Police Department sponsors an annual awards ceremony to recognize outstanding service. The Department also hosts National Night Out Against Crime, a fun evening with food, drinks, games for the children and favors from the Police Department and local businesses. It is a great opportunity to visit with neighbors and meet some of the Belle Meade Police Officers.
