Building Permits

Building permits can be obtained from the office of the Building Official. Generally, if the project falls within the guidelines of the Zoning Code, a permit can be issued without going before the Board of Zoning Appeals. The City of Belle Meade has adopted the 2006 ICC International Residential Code. According to Section R101.3 of the International Residential Code, the purpose of this code is to provide minimum requirements to safeguard the public safety, health and general welfare through affordability, structural strength, means of egress facilities, stability, sanitation, light and ventilation, energy conservation and safety to life and property from fire and other hazards attributed to the built environment. The provisions of the Code apply to the construction, addition, alteration and repair of one and two family dwellings and their accessory structures. For more information, contact:

Appeals

Generally, if a project does not fall within the guidelines of Belle Meade’s Zoning Code, the homeowner must file an application with the Board of Zoning Appeals and seek approval for the project before a building permit can be issued. The Board of Zoning Appeals meets the third Tuesday of the month at 5:00pm. Deadline for plans and appeal fees will be 12:00 noon, fifteen (15) calendar days before the meeting. If it is determined that an appeal is needed, the following three items are required at time of submission in order to be placed on the agenda:

  1. Application and two sets of plans, consisting of the information listed above under Plot Plan and Building Plan.
  2. Appeal fee and all engineering/professional review fees must be paid when documents are filed. Application for appeal is not complete and will not be placed on the agenda until all fees are paid.
